How to show kids L.O.V.E.

L - learn about them, learn their names, family, pets, recreation, hobbies, dreams,
What would you do with a million dollars?
Pass out a survey, add their picture, use this as a prayer notebook (I have always intended to do this).

O - observe them. Don't be so wrapped up in your own agenda that you don't notice what they are going through/feelings. observe their "stuff" connect

V - value. Show them that they have value. Celebrate them - go nuts when they arrive, high fives etc. Heart speech...I don't have to be here... no martyr attitude
There is nothing significant to a kid about you as their teacher. They always have an adult in charge. You are someone else. They realize value when we do something OUTSIDE the classroom. Most grown ups don't have time for kids through the week. Visit them at home.

E- encourage. Say something encouraging to every child every week. Q&A encourage guesses. Look for ways to build them up.

Gentleness Bible Lesson

"But the fruit of the Spirit is, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control." Galatians 5:22-23a Our children's Church has been doing a unit on the fruit of the Spirit. Each week we learn one of the components on that list. This lesson is about gentleness. Here is the story I adapted focusing on Jesus' gentleness. As with all scripture there are many facets to each episode. There are tons we can learn from them but when you teach children, consider the age and the maturity level of your kids. We are teaching 4-7 year olds and some of our 4 year olds are very "young". So this story has been adapted, not changing scripture but just being wise about what information a young child needs to know. In this passage we see Jesus being gentle with a sinful woman. There are several scriptures portraying Jesus as gentle. You could choose any of them. For this unit the curriculum outline we follow uses this

Store Your Treasures In Heaven Activity

19 “Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. 21 Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be. Matthew 6 I found this great science activity to use four our unit on storing treasure in heaven and the kids loved it! It takes a little preparation ahead of time but it was really easy. You will need: ice trays, (or other mold that can be put in the freezer.) 3 parts baking soda 1 part water Jello gelatin as much as desired, flavor/color of your choosing. (We chose blue for ours.) vinegar (we used almost 2 gallons) something to squirt the vinegar out (condiment bottle, turkey baster, eye dropper etc.) To Prepare: Mix the baking soda and water, add in the Jello as desired. Self-Control Bible Lesson

Thanks to the Kidologist and the Kidology Cookbook , I am able to quickly come up with different ways to tell a Bible story that are fun and easy to learn. If you stand in front of kids that are varied in ages with all kinds of varied attention spans and just talk, talk, talk; (I call it bobbing head) you aren't going to engage them for very long. You'll have discipline problems for sure, but mostly they won't internalize what it is you want them to know. Here is a story I wrote, with help from a friend, for an upcoming lesson on self-control. For this story, we are going to make an acrostic using each letter in the word "Self-Control". The focus is on Peter as he makes mistakes that he was sure he would not make. But the good news is Jesus still loves him and forgives him even though he knew that Peter was going to mess up before it even happened. Isn't Jesus awesome!
